An American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent known for his raw gestural style of painting, a graffiti prodigy in late-1970s in New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat. By the time he was 20, he had introduced his urban style through his graffiti murals in which, after some time, made their way onto canvases and wooden pallets. Through his easily recognizable works, he pioneered the underground movement that depicted strong socio-political themes and apparent interest in human anatomy.
"Admired across the world, Jean-Michel Basquiat shot to fame in the early 1980s with his unmistakable brand of contemporary art. He astonished the New York scene by making the transition from unknown graffiti artist to internationally acclaimed Neo-Expressionist in just a couple of years."
He died in 1988, but his works continued to live globally. Social commentaries were evident in his masterpieces, which worked as a tool for introspection in identifying with his experiences in the black community of his time and attacks on power structures and systems of racism. Here's a compilation of Basquiat's famous and memorable works:
"I don't think about art while I work," he once said. "I think about life."-Basquiat
Andy Warhol x Jean Michel Basquiat Between the years 1984-1985, Warhol and Basquiat merged their disparate approaches to painting into a dynamic group of collaborative works on canvas. The resulting paintings, six of which are displayed in the current exhibition, underscored each artist's unique style and production method while at the same time giving rise to a vibrant and original body of work.Van De Weghe
Riding with death, 1988 - One of Basquiat's final paintings, completed before his death in 1988. In a relatively sparse and simple composition compared to the frenetic, colorful explosions he is most known for, he depicted an African-American figure riding a white skeleton against a textured beige background.

"Decades after his death, Basquiat's presence recommences to surface mainly in the fashion and art worlds that it's almost as if his symbolism has taken on an entirely distinctive life of its own. His genuine artwork continues to elicit prices in the millions at auction, but there's also the prolific licensing of his works by his estate."H. Holmes
