Everyones favorite selfie mirror
One of the most recognizable names in 20th century design is that of Ettore Sottsass. The founder of the Italian design group Memphis, Sottsass was known for pushing boundaries with his creative approach to design. Today we will be exploring one example of this innovative designer’s work, the Ultrafragola Mirror/lamp.
Created by Ettore Sottsass in 1978, the Ultrafragola Mirror/lamp is a unique design that shows off Sottsass’ playful approach to design. The mirror has an octagonal shape composed of yellow plastic encased by a slender wood frame. Adjacent to the glass there is a dichroic glass tube that was meant to highlight the work of art merely by adding light. The organic form of the mirror is unlike any other design object, and it truly embodies Sottsass’ creative genius.
One of the notable aspects of this product is its name, “Ultrafragola.” The word is written in the same typeface as Memphis, a design group founded by Sottsass. We can assume that the name was inspired by the popular Italian dessert, Fragola which means strawberry or strawberry flavoring. The name adds to the playfulness of this particular design project because it was given a name similar to one of the group’s other works.
