The accessory has been popping up frequently on runways, looking very cool and trendy. This is a far cry from its origins as a storage pack for valuables such as money, credit cards, prescription medication and other small items that needed to be carried while the hands were preoccupied. The urban dictionary states that fanny packs are also called "waist packs," "wannabe bags" or simply, a “bum bag”.

What happened to make the fanny pack so popular? The answer lies in its utility and practicality. Prada did it first when they showcased their backpack and shoulder bag hybrid dubbed the "Tom Bag" in fall 2013, which was later name-dropped in Kanye West's Yeezus track "I Am A God". Meanwhile, Chanel has seemingly reinvented the classic fanny pack with their backpack/pouch hybrid called the "Merci Laptop Fanny Pack", which is touted to be as efficient and practical as it is stylish.

Yves Saint Laurent added to the fanny pack trend with their "No Logo Pouch". This pouch is a hybrid of sorts as well, being a cross between a fanny pack and a pencil case in that it can be worn around the waist as a fanny pack or over one's shoulder like an ordinary clutch.

The bag has been trending for years, and it is no wonder why. It has a very practical use of holding necessities while freeing up one's hands to do other things. They can fit into most outfit styles without being too flashy or distracting from the overall look, making them an ideal choice for everyday wear in any season. And who would have thought that fanny packs would ever be fashionable again?

The fanny pack not only makes a fashion statement, it can also hold up to 15.6" laptops and tablets as well as other things that you usually have in your backpack or shoulder bag while allowing you to take hands-free items with you on the go. They are waterproof, making them ideal for outdoor activities like biking, hiking and camping.

The fanny pack is also known to be versatile and can be used for overnight travel or as a baby diaper bag. Such versatility means that the possibilities are endless with the application of this shoulder pouch hybrid. Talk about multitasking! And it would appear that these bags really do have many uses in everyday life. Some streetwear enthusiasts wear it as an alternative to a backpack and some are seen sporting them at music festivals or just basically anywhere.
