It looks like the bag of our 90s dreams is coming back. Fendi announced this week that they are introducing a limited re-edition Baguette embroidered with all-over purple sequins of different shapes and sizes on their classic loafers, which were made famous by Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw.
The new shoes are updated versions of the 1990s' style, which will be available to order exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman.
Sex and the City was an important moment for luxury fashion in pop culture, and it is hard to imagine that such a reference did not play any role when the Italian brand decided to revive this emblematic design.
"It was always in our DNA," explains Adriana Gallo, Fendi's accessories director. "I think Carrie Bradshaw having these shoes in Sex and the City was also very iconic."
The baguette has not had a revival for some time, but it is again ubiquitous with the '90s revival we are currently seeing across fashion.
Last season, shows like Gucci and Burberry put them on runways while Victoria Beckham recently released her own take on the style. Fendi's baguettes are more refined, with a curved top and more structured shape.
"I love that it has a masculine touch," Gallo explains. "This was the idea of the designer Silvia Venturini Fendi."
The shoes will come in different sizes ranging from 35 to 41 as well as two widths: normal and wide. Customers can order them with an adjustable chain and logo-printed velcro strap or a metal chain and padlock.
An additional hint of sophistication is the fact that these shoes come with a dust bag — a detail that some luxury fashion houses like Louis Vuitton have recently decided to omit on accessories like bags and wallets.
"We decided to put a dust bag in the shoe so people can take it with them," Gallo says. The re-edition purple Baguette will come in three styles: one style with a logo-printed velcro strap and chain, another with an adjustable chain and padlock, and a third that comes with a suede strap and a metal chain.
