Damien Hirst’s Verity Statue: a Unique and Powerful Attraction

The Verity statue, located in Ilfracombe, Devon, is one of Damien Hirst’s most famous and controversial works of art. The massive sculpture stands at over 65 feet tall and depicts a pregnant woman with her arms outstretched. The work has been both praised and criticized for its unique and powerful visual impact.

The sculpture, which depicts a naked pregnant woman holding up a sword and standing on the base of legal tomes, depicts half of her body entreating with ligaments and viscera exposed. The piece, which contains the Italian word for ‘truth,’ refers to Hirst’s previous bronze work Virgin Mother from 2005 and alludes to his earlier work with anatomical models. Verity was first shown to the public in 2007, when it was installed on the quayside at Ilfracombe Harbour. The sculpture has since become one of the town’s most popular tourist attractions.

“one of Damien Hirst’s most famous and controversial works of art.”

The Verity statue was commissioned by the local council in Ilfracombe as part of a regeneration project for the town. The sculpture cost £3 million to create and was installed in 2011. It quickly became a tourist attraction, with people coming from all over the world to see it. However, not everyone is a fan of the statue. Some people believe that it is inappropriate for a seaside town and that it does not represent the traditional values of Ilfracombe. Others have criticized the cost of the sculpture, particularly at a time when public spending cuts were being made elsewhere.

Despite the controversy, the Verity statue remains one of Damien Hirst’s most iconic and well-known works of art. It is a powerful and unique piece that has made a lasting impression on those who have seen it.
