Basquiat’s most expensive work

Three Jean-Michel Basquiat paintings were sold for a total of $110.5 million at auction, making them the most expensive works by an American artist ever sold. The buyers were not disclosed, but it’s safe to say that they’re very wealthy individuals! The paintings in question were all created in the early 1980s, during Basquiat’s brief but prolific career. “Untitled” (1982) fetched the highest price of $45.3 million, followed by ” Untitled” (1981), which sold for $34 million. The third and final painting, “Untitled” (1982), went for $31.2 million.

Basquiat’s paintings have always been popular with collectors, but the prices have been steadily increasing in recent years. In May of 2016, one of his works sold for $57.3 million, setting a new world record at the time. Now, just a few months later, that record has been broken by these three new paintings.

What makes Basquiat’s work so special? Many people see him as a spokesperson for the urban youth of his era, and his paintings are full of raw energy and passion. He was also one of the first artists to use street art as a medium, which gave his work a unique edge. It’s clear that Basquiat’s work is only becoming more popular as time goes on, and we can expect to see his paintings fetching ever-higher prices at future auctions.

What accounts for the increasing prices? Part of it may be attributed to the fact that Basquiat is a “new” artist in the eyes of collectors. He only had a brief career before he died at the age of 27, so there’s still a lot of his work that’s not been seen or studied by the public. In addition, the prices of other major artists, like Pablo Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci, have been steadily increasing over the years, so collectors are always on the lookout for the next big thing. Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt that Basquiat is one of the most sought-after artists in the world right now.
